An earthquake cannot be avoided since it is a natural movement of the earth. In some places, it is also a part of their lives. However, it also causes damages to the home. One of the most common damages it brings is a slab leak. When the earth moves, it also causes damages to the water supply pipe under the house.
What is a Slab Leak?
A slab leak is a leak in the water lines located below the concrete foundation of a home. Slab leak also means leaking sewer pipes under your home’s groundwork. When the leak happens above the ground, for example, on the wall or ceiling, they are called pinhole leaks. There are two sides of the foundation where slab leaks usually appear — the drainage side and the pressure side. When slab leaks appear at the drainage side of the foundation, it is usually noticeable. But when slab leaks happen at the pressure side of the foundation, it takes a long time to be noticed since it is difficult to see any signs of the leak.
Slab leaks happen when there is too much movement on the foundation especially when the pipes are rigid plastic or PVC. They easily acquire stress cracks due to the movement. However, newer homes are using flexible water lines or PEX. This kind of water line is somewhat flexible and can move with the slab movement.
Causes of a Slab Leak
1. Improper construction
When the foundation is not done properly or when there are already problems in the installation system, problems might occur in the future. It is important to ensure the quality of the construction. The foundation is an important part of the house and the most difficult to fix since the house is sitting on it.
2. Movement in the foundation
The soil beneath our homes constantly move. When the movement is strong, it usually causes stress to the pipes that lead to cracks and leaks.
3. Deterioration of Pipes
The pipes usually expand because of water flow and when they are exposed to some elements that might rub against them, it causes scratch or damage to the lines and eventually leads to deterioration
The soil has chemical contents that cause corrosion when the soil touches the pipes. Moreover, hot and cold water pipes corrode due to temperature and chemical influences.
